Live: Saint Raymond
Saint Raymond (aka 23-year-old Callum Burrows) combines the uniquely British idiosyncratic energy of Foals with the arena-sized appeal of Vampire Weekend. He boasts melodic anthems that pack an immediate punch from their infectious choruses with lyrics that pithily address the poignancy and euphoria of life in your late teens and early twenties.
Looking back, it seems music was always going to be the focus of his life. He acquired from his Dad a love of Simple Minds and The Police being particular favourites and the chiming, charming Afrobeat of Paul Simon. By 16, he was actively gigging around the Nottingham circuit. “I played pubs, open-mic nights, anything I could get.” Just Callum and his guitar, he would perform a mix of original songs and covers of tunes by Bombay Bicycle Club, King Charles and Oasis“I got such a buzz out of it,” he says of his early gigging days.
Soon he was getting support slots at venues such as Nottingham’s famed Rock City – a 2000 capacity venue that he would later sell out before his debut album had even dropped. The boy from Bramcote – who acquired the name Saint Raymond from the street where he grew up and his granddad Raymond was on his way out of Nottingham. He recruited musicians to form his band that would allow him to achieve the live sound he wanted & released his first EP ‘Escapade’ in 2013 on Never Fade Records.
Support for Saint Raymond’s early releases Escapade & Young Blood EP (2014) was overwhelming. He was embraced by broadsheets, radio and indie tastemakers alike. He quickly built a fanbase of loyal fans who connected with his honest lyrics & energetic live performances. Saint Raymond took to the road – completing multiple sold out UK tours and becoming a regular face on the UK festival circuit.
During a session at Maida Vale, Zane Lowe a former Radio 1 presenter breathlessly declared of Callum-
“It suddenly dawned on me when you were singing that song: I totally get it now like, You are the latest in a long line of this wonderful lineage of classic British singer-songwriters with that kind of street edge. That’s what it is.”
Then came the opportunity of a lifetime – the main support slot opening for Ed Sheeran on his UK & European tour in 2014. Having been asked via text personally by Ed, Saint Raymond jumped at the chance and spent three months on the road, honing his live set to perfection and playing to over 400,000 people across 32 arenas in the process.
Following the mammoth tour, Saint Raymond released his debut album Young Blood in June 2015. The album which was produced by famed Jacknife Lee (U2, Bloc Party, Kasabian) charted top 10 in the UK album chart and spawned a slew of indie anthems including – “Fall At Your Feet”, “Everything She Wants”, “Come Back To You” and “As We Are Now”. Saint Raymond didn’t rest for a minute – heading out on yet another sold out UK tour to celebrate his album with fans.
Throughout 2016 Saint Raymond spent time in the studio writing and recording new material and collaborating with artists like Netsky ‘Leave it Alone’ and Philip George’s ‘Chasing My Heart’. Saint Raymond showed a maturing in his sound with his ‘A Light That Blinds’ which was released in November 2017. A dark and edgy 4 track EP with heavy baselines and Saint Raymond’s signature sing along guitar riffs present throughout. Saint Raymond says “I wrote most of A Light That Blinds in the midst of touring and festival madness. The songs on the EP epitomise the emotions – both highs and lows of the whole rollercoaster ride I was on at the time with life and with music.”
Not wanting to pause from releasing new music, in April 2018 Saint Raymond announced ‘Three’ a project that would see him play 3 intimate live shows in 3 days & release 3 new songs for his fans in the process. The shows in London, Manchester and his hometown of Nottingham predictably sold out in under 15 minutes.
